Report on CALL lesson 1 and work done by each class

Last Wednesday CALL lesson1 was a success with the students. They were very excited, quite attentive and well behaved.

We used the wireless connection in Sala TIC, which is faster this year, together with my laptop and a video projector, which projected onto a whiteboard. There was one student at a time at the computer and all others looked at the whiteboard to see the projection. During message writing time, one students was at the board while another was at the computer copying from the board. They enjoyed seeing their end product at once published in our blog.

All pages opened quickly and we were able to get everything done, except with 5. D. But that was my fault: two messages to write is a big demand on beginners and I did want them to look at the messages in page 1. So I opted to do only message 1 and then go directly to the interactive exercises, so they could have some fun. The exercises were a hit with the three classes.

5. C enjoyed all the messages in page 1, especially the Art Gallery. Many of them have draings there. Since they had never recorded a message in class with my PDA, they wrote a message to Francisco about his "Funny teacher" song (3 Feb 2006 message) and then recorded it. Here are the results!

Hi, Francisco!
We like your song and your singing.
We also like your words.
Congratulations!!!!!
5º C

The audio file has been deleted from user's Mediablog.

5. E enjoyed looking at the first page of the blog and chose their favorite message: the Art Gallery (25 Apr 2006 message)!  Here's their comment about it!

We like the drawings best, because they are funny and colorful, and some are crazy. Congratulations to all of the artists! :-)
5. E

Finally, it was time for 5. D. They also looked at page 1 and liked the Art Gallery very much. As I said above, I eliminated one activity. After looking at our Frappr map (18 Jan 2006 message), they wrote this message for all the teachers:

Hello teachers!
How are you?
We like your messages and photos. Thank you!
Goodbye from 5. D

Then they played with the interactive exercises. They loved the "Speedword" spelling exercise best!

I invited Margarida Miranda, a colleague who teaches 7th to 9th grade English, to observe 5. D and me in action. She thinks it was a very motivating and dynamic lesson, and felt that the girls were more attentive and interested than the boys. This is a curious comment and one that I'll try to observe carefully in future CALL lessons.

Though the default font seems big enough, I'll have to enlarge it, since some of the kids at the back were having trouble reading.

Last but not least, I was pleased with this first lesson and with the students' motivation. I had feedback from them the following lesson and they're very happy to have one CALL lesson every Tuesday until the end of the school year.
